When my husband and I moved here from Cincinnati one of the first things we did was scout out the local craft breweries. I mean, being from Cincinnati, one of the top craft brewery cities in the country, it never dawned on us that there would not be an abundance of breweries. In fact, with the exception of River Dog in Ridgeland, they were pretty much non-existent in the Hilton Head area. Then, right across the street from us in Bluffton the Southern Barrel Brewing Company was opened. From that time forward, more and more craft breweries started to pop up. Now, there are plenty of places to go and enjoy a local flight of beers.
Here are some of our favorites.
River Dog Brewing Company
Located at 591 Browns Cove Road North in Ridgeland, SC, River Dog is about 25 minutes North of Hilton Head Island. The brewery is open Tuesday through Sunday and offers food, fun, and of course some of the best from scratch craft beer in the Lowcountry. The brewery usually has about 10 beers on tap and the selections are updated monthly. River Dog has a laid-back atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating and is pet-friendly (outdoors). Salt Marsh Brewing Company
Located within Fat Patties in Old Town Bluffton, SC. Salt Marsh Brewing Company has become the “must go” place near The Promenade area of Old Town. The brewery is open seven days a week and has both indoor and outdoor seating. The brew menu has lots of choices with year-round, seasonal, series, and one-offs in addition to the awesome Fat Patties menu. Salt Marsh is one “hopping” place pretty much any night of the week but often has live bands scheduled on the weekend. For more information on The Salt Marsh Brewing Company click here.
Hilton Head Brewing Company
Off the beaten path but well worth the trip you’ll find the Hilton Head Brewing Company. Located at 1 Cardinal Road on Hilton Head Island, many visitors make this one stop on the trifecta. Located on the same street, you will find the Island Winery and the Hilton Head Distillery. The Hilton Head Brewing Company is open seven days a week and usually has about 12 craft beers on tap. Moon River Brewing Company
Okay…so this brewing company is located in Savannah and not Hilton Head but since they brew my favorite Pale Ale of all times (Yoga Pants) I had to mention it. Not to mention, Savannah is only 20 minutes from Bluffton and is one of the coolest cities on earth. Oh…and did I mention this brewhouse is haunted? Moon River will not disappoint with its full menu of year-round and seasonal craft beers on tap along with its large menu of great food. This alehouse has both indoor and outdoor seating and has been around since 1999. So yeah… they’ve got it right. For more information on The Moon River Brewing Company click here.
Now you have four great choices scattered from Hilton Head Island to Savannah. Each is unique in its own way and honestly… I love them all. You really can’t go wrong so pick one and enjoy a flight!
